There is no longer a “tech” sector. To say a business is in “technology” is like saying a business is in marketing. Every business is in marketing. Technology is all-pervasive in modern life. Today, every business is in “technology”.
It’s all about marketing – the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives (AMA). Technology is not an end in itself. It is not a homogenous industry in itself. Every business nowadays is knowledge-based. Every business is communications-dependent. Of course, we deal with the Technology, Media and Telecommunications sector. Who has not in the last ten years? Software developers, network integrators, new materials and compounds, software and hardware resellers, companies in optics, mobile communications and other telecommunications, radio stations, newspapers and publications, 3G, imaging, gaming, messaging, interactive, digital, cable, life sciences. . . . . . . We have advised companies in raising venture and angel capital, in developing business plans and growth strategies, in forming strategic alliances, making acquisitions and being acquired, in seeking partners, in granting shares to employees and in financial appraisals of new developments. Like any group of businesses, our TMT clients have had mixed fortunes in recent years and some have performed dramatic u-turns from the brink of failure to considerable success – and vice versa. We have dealt with and/or acted for venture capitalists; University departments/spin-offs/researchers from UL, NUIG, UCC, Trinity, LIT; promoters, start-ups and more established companies. We have valued businesses, negotiated shareholdings, bought and sold interests in and whole businesses, fund-raised, done due diligence, carried out litigation support and independent reviews, advised on giving shareholdings and getting them back. We are retained by Shannon Development to assist companies on their high-potential-start-up “Venturestart” programme. So, technology hasn’t gone away. TMT remains a critical plank in the future of the Irish economy and ultimately it is one of the few areas of primary value generation where entrepreneurs can achieve a global impact from an Irish base. Even within the Irish economy, there are huge ongoing opportunities for resellers, service providers, joint ventures, content management, communications and streamlining the information overload. For us to add value to the TMT sector is not about being technologists – it is about being strategic financial advisors with an understanding of marketing. We know more than our fair share about IP, share options, venture capital and TMT business valuation - not to mention “traction”, “vapourware”, “burn rate”, and “paradigm shifts” etc. ! For our TMT clients, as for all our other clients, we add value by understanding the risk/reward relationship in corporate finance, the means of sourcing evidence in support of an investment pitch, how to negotiate a shareholding and how to protect IP. Critically, we know precisely how VC and other professional technology investors think and operate. We talk to them all the time, we advise them and they hire us. We strive to understand the financial and marketing implications of everything our client does. TMT clients need particularly strong financial advisors because, in dealing with intangible assets, jittery investors, uncertain markets, rapid external changes and slow progress, they need an objective voice who will bring credibility, patience AND innovation to their corporate financial outlook.
